My apprenticeship has given me practical experience and the opportunity to learn whilst on the job. It has also given me the opportunity to put my Gaelic skills to good use.

Annabel Matheson

What were you doing before you started your apprenticeship?

I was working at the local shop in my village and I was also on the relief list for a short time where I got various shifts.

What made you want to do your apprenticeship?

I had an interest in childcare since I was in secondary school as I completed a foundation apprenticeship in children and young people and I would go visit a nursery 3 times a week to gain experience.

How have you found your apprenticeship so far?

At the beginning, I found my apprenticeship a wee bit challenging but I feel I have adjusted well to the setting and I really enjoy what I do.

What tasks do you complete on an average day?

On average day, I will meet parents at the gate, sanitise lunchboxes and water-bottles, prepare snack and do activities with children based on what the nursery focus is that week.

What do you hope to do when you finish your apprenticeship?

Once I have finished my apprenticeship and gained my qualification I hope to get a job as a nursery worker.

What would you say to someone interested in the same apprenticeship?

I would say that this is a great opportunity where you can learn, develop new skills and gain a qualification. It is also a good way to earn money and confidence within the workplace.
